My Store The Empire Strikes Back Dark Ale - 5L All Grain Kit
Inspired by the Star Wars original trilogy, the Pop Culture Brews podcast (2019-2021) crew set out on an intergalactic mission to create beer recipes inspired by episodes IV, V, and VI. For the second episode in the trilogy—The Empire Strikes Back (1980)—Pop Culture Brews cohost Paul Crowther (aka The Mad Brewer) created a beer recipe that captures the film’s darker, more sinister tone. Adding Carafa III, a dark-roasted barley, makes the recipe darker (~45 SRM) and instills some mild roasted notes in the aftertaste. While this beer is impenetrably dark compared to its Episode IV predecessor, The Empire Strikes Back Dark Ale is still bursting full of Citra hop flavour, reflecting the lighter moments of Episode V. My Store Riwaka Pale Ale - 5L All Grain Kit
Who doesn't love a refreshing beverage, let alone an adult beverage? This beer was inspired by long days and warm nights, and the warm and fuzzy feeling you get on a Summer's Day.Having done this recipe with over 7 hops, it seems the shop has settled on Riwaka being the best of the 7 so far.The beer is balanced, not overly bitter, and an absolute citrus eruption, leading to a nearly knee wobbling smooth finish.The chit wheat really shines in this recipe, and does, indeed, give a 'velvety' mouthfeel. My Store Return of the Jedi Pale Ale - 5L All Grain Kit
Inspired by the Star Wars original trilogy, the Pop Culture Brews podcast (2019-2021) crew set out on an intergalactic mission to create beer recipes inspired by episodes IV, V, and VI. For the final episode in the trilogy—Return of the Jedi (1983)—Pop Culture Brews cohost Andrew Sanders crafted a pale ale recipe reminiscent of Endor, the forest moon that is home to the furry and ferocious Ewoks. Andrew wanted Return of the Jedi Pale Ale to have more piney and earthy hop notes to reflect the forest setting of the final battle between the Rebels and the evil Empire. As a result, Return of the Jedi Pale Ale uses the same grist as A New Hope Pale Ale, but changes the dry hop additions to Simcoe and Chinook for a more West Coast-style hop. Pink Boots is an annually released blended hop of several different hops, which derives its name from Yakima Hops partnering with the Pink Boots Society, which is a non-profit that focuses on women in the Brewing Industry. This year's (2020's release) is a blend of Cashmere, Antanum, Citra, Loral, and Sabro. It's a lovely nose/taste of tropical, herbal, citrus and woody notes. My Store Lordy He's 40 - English Style Bitter - 5L All Grain Kit
Australia has deep roots connecting itself with the English, and the beer here down under should reflect that! ESB stands for English Style Bitter, which is one of the oldest styles of beers out there, and has a malty background, even bitterness, and clean hop flavour. No dry hop, no fancy frills, and goes down like water off a ducks back. This recipe uses special x for a bit of complexity, and light chocolate for nailing in the colour. My Store Galaxy Smash IPA - 5L All Grain Kit
Galaxy is probably the most famous hop in Australia. I’m willing to bet that every pale ale (9/10 at least) uses Galaxy in Australia. It is an absolute powerhouse. My inspiration for this beer was born out of using the Norwegian yeast Kveik (pronounced Ka-wi-k) and the lovey fruit flavours and esters it produces. This beer really shows how a hop and yeast pairing can complement one another. The potency of the Kviek, balanced by the potency of the Galaxy. This is a beauty of a beer and if you’re learning the ins and outs of recipe development, I highly recommend this recipe to help you understand the tastes of both.
