Extract Classes Now On

We’ve now started offering extract brewing classes, which is a good way to take your brewing to the next level.

Extract brewing is great, it affords you a level of control that you don’t get using Kits + Bits, you can control the bitterness and hop flavour profiles, add various grains to change colour and malt profiles, without the hassle of doing a full mash. Even if you intend to make the switch to all-grain down the track, extract brewing gets you half way there.

We had our first extract class a few nights ago, and we brewed a 4.5L batch. We went with a small batch because it sped up the demonstration a bit (less time to bring your wort to the boil and to chill afterwards) and allowed us to use one of our off-the-shelf 5L “brew time” refills.

Here’s what went into the Stout we brewed:

  • 750g Dark Dry Malt Extract
  • 40g Chocolate Malt
  • 40g Roast Barley
  • 5g Magnum – 60 min
  • 5g East Kent Golding – 10 min
  • 5g East Kent Golding – 0 min (whirlpool)
  • 1/3 Sachet Safale S-04

The stout smells fantastic when it’s cooking; rich, dark and malty – this should be a tasty winter warmer.

We also took the guys through some brewing software and demonstrated where to start formulating your own recipes, modifying existing recipes and converting all-grain recipes to partial mash or extract brews.

Keep an eye out for more classes coming up on our Events page.

If you did our extract class and want to give all-grain a go, we’ve got a class coming up!
